Mentors are the backbone of our program, with high expectations to provide academic support, a strong sense of community, respect for others, healthy risk-taking, vowing commitment, and discipline to mentees. Mentors help students establish value in higher education and pursue valuable skills to build and use networks in their desired institutions or careers. Mentors act as teachers, guides, and advisors; they are individuals whose actions and words will have long-term impacts on their mentees. Vision looks for and supports mentors who understand our values.

The development of mentees depends on exploring academic and career aspirations and pursuing self-improvement. As a mentor, your role is to help mentees actively implement strategies in their exploration toward a prosperous future. As a mentor, you provide students with a path to follow. Sharing your wisdom, experiences, and feedback is what most mentees will expect and hope to receive. Here are a few roles and responsibilities to help you understand your position.
At Vision Mentoring, we believe that effective mentorship is rooted in strong training and ongoing support. We recruit high school mentors who align with our core values, and we ensure they are fully prepared to engage with and support younger students. Our training program provides mentors with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively facilitate group discussions, build positive relationships, and navigate challenges that may arise during sessions. Mentors also receive guidance on how to model positive behavior and foster a supportive, inclusive environment. In addition to initial training, mentors are regularly supported and supervised by full-time staff, ensuring that they have the resources and oversight they need to be successful. By providing this comprehensive training and support, we ensure that all mentors have a shared understanding of best practices in mentoring and group facilitation, making the experience valuable for both the mentors and the students they serve.
